One of the earliest recorded performances of Hamlet, during Shakespeare’s lifetime, took place off the East Coast of South Africa when, in 1608, the crew of the East India Ship, Red Dragon performed Hamlet aboard their ship. This historic performance serves as the inspiration for our production.
The Abrahamse & Meyer production of HAMLET originally premiered at the 2015 National Arts Festival and has since played to rave reviews and standing ovations across Europe, South Africa and the United States of America. Critics have praised the production as a “tour de force” and “a masterpiece” while the critic for The Huffington Post in America stated “I thought I had seen a decent Hamlet before, but Abrahamse & Meyer Production’s Hamlet made my other viewing experience seem amateur by comparison. The excellent performances, innovative interpretations of the text, and bold design choices all came together to create a transcendent production that I will not soon forget.”
Over the past 5 years, in association with Artscape and Pieter Toerien Productions this internationally acclaimed production of HAMLET [a prescribed work for Grade 12 English Language First Choice] has been performed to thousands of learners in the Western Cape and Gauteng Province.
Due to the National Lockdown this year, all runs of this production of HAMLET for learners have been cancelled or postponed. However, Abrahamse and Meyer Productions are making the Artscape 2018 production available on their YouTube channel FREE OF CHARGE!
