Megan and I at Plug In Theatre have been incredibly blessed by the love and support we have received in the last month for the Plug In Theatre Festival. Since the first of April, we have received daily entries to the festival. This has included singers, dancers, songwriters, performing artists, and many more. As of today, we have had 45 incredible performers enter the festival. Artists have come together to display their talents and stand together as a community during these uncertain times.

Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all theatres have gone dark and we are likely to be one of the very last industries to open. This means that many performers (like the ones who have entered the festival) will have little to no work for the foreseeable future. When the lockdown was implemented, Megan and I got straight to creating something for performers to do and work towards in the month of April. Arguably, we were creating something for us to do as well. We were nervous in the beginning - something like this had never been done before and no one really understood what we were trying to do. But as the days went on, the performing arts industry embraced the idea and we had incredible people backing the project with words of encouragement, as well as donations.
From the get-go, we were intentional that the Plug In Theatre Festival was not just an opportunity for performers to create and gain social media "exposure", but also an opportunity to earn. We started a Thundafund crowdfunding page in conjunction with the Festival in order for audiences to contribute what they could to the artists who performed in the virtual festival. Megan and I have been working daily on getting more donations so that we are able to pay these wonderfully talented artists. We have advertised every which way we can to gain more backers in order to give the performers something significant at the end of this festival.
We were amazed at the reception and support we received from the industry after our very first PlugInLIVE with Weslee Lauder - where we had phenomenal musical theatre stars sing in a virtual concert in aid of the festival. As of today, we have raised R16,768.00 which is absolutely wonderful!
I wouldn't be doing what I had promised to do if I didn't do one last push for backers in these last few days. We have 3 days left of the festival and I would like to appeal to anyone and everyone who can support these artists to please do so before the festival ends.
