Applications for prestigious role close on 30th October.
After a successful and dynamic five-year period of creative leadership, Jazzart Dance Theatre’s Artistic Director, Sifiso Kweyama, concluded his contract to return to his hometown in KwaZulu Natal. Jazzart has thus begun the search for his successor who will take up the position in 2021, with applications closing on 30 October 2020.
The new incumbent will be required to continue the non-profit contemporary dance company and training institute’s high standards and reputation of using dance as a transformative tool to fully interrogate social awareness and cultural inclusiveness.
Encouraging applicants to take on the role of a lifetime, Kweyama said: “The past five years at Jazzart has been an exciting experience. I have learnt so much and enjoyed sharing my knowledge with our students, creating new productions and expanding our outreach programmes. The team of dedicated professionals whom I leave behind have survived the challenges caused by the Covid-19 pandemic thus far. Although the future is still unknown and we expect that picking up the pieces will take time, the energy and talent of everyone involved at, and with Jazzart, bodes well for the future and for the lucky person whose privilege it will be to lead the organisation artistically.”
Malcolm Higgins, Jazzart’s Board Chairperson, said: “Under Sifiso’s expert tutelage, Jazzart has truly evolved and grown. While we understand and accept his reasons for leaving us without reservation, he will be sorely missed by all. We wish him well with his endeavours and look forward to collaborating with him on projects in the future.”
Applications for the position of Artistic Director to step into Kweyama’s shoes will close on 30 October 2020.
The role of Artistic Director at Jazzart is hands-on, as well as creative and visionary. The successful candidate will be someone with the necessary professional qualifications and experience, who has a passion for not only dance and producing works of an exemplary standard, but developing and nurturing the talent among the youth, to an extent they become ambassadors for Jazzart and carry the baton forward to future generations. Broad shoulders, metaphorically speaking, would be an advantage as this role also involves being active in securing funding, stakeholder interaction, along with media and public engagements.
