In response to what may be a very extended time of us not being able to gather - an essential to the live performance experience - we are looking for ways to encourage, experiment and incubate virtual storytelling through our various platforms and with our various skills in the POPArt team. Right now, we are playing with formats, mediums and platforms to see how best live artists can manage the transition into virtual storytelling : not only out of necessity for our financial security but also because it offers us a fun challenge and ultimately an additional way for stories to reach an audience ...anywhere! We are excited!!!
So far, we are ready to share two such experiments with you :
Tonight, inspired by our 24 Hours in the city, we bring youIncubator21: a project that has been taking place across multiple cities over the past 21 days. Since the start of lockdown on 27 March, we have "gathered" 20 performing arts students and 10 mentors to create new works in the digital space, under the producing prowess of our intern producerDintshitile Mashile. The final product is 6 short pieces produced in separate togetherness around the country! But played together at once.
These pieces will be premiered live TONIGHT at 8pmvia our Facebook page and IGTV (@popartjhb).Please tune in and share the occasion with us! We think it's cause to celebrate.
Next week, we go to a different platform completely with ZOOMPROV LIVE. Pretty much what is says on the box: Improv on Zoom. Join our POPArt improv group on Wednesday 22 April at 8pm as we share with you a format we have been working on since self-isolating became cool. It's totally adapted, it's actually live, its fully original and, as far as we are aware, it's a whole lot of fun! All you need to do is click on the booking link below to receive the zoom meeting link to become a participating guest (we can accommodate up to 100 people in our Zoom 'room').
Also online, and what has been keeping us SANE, are morningly at home workouts with one of our favourite makers, Sinenhlanhla Mgeyi. Join a community of actors who vuka (#VukaActorClub) every morning to keep our bodies fit and our minds healthy. 9am every morning on Facebook live : you'll find the link on our social pages.
For all of the above- we know its an experiment, for us and for you, so all programming is currently FREE (you pay for the data, though). However we do encourage donations before, after and during the programming so we can get a sense of costs going forward. Of course, if you would like to donate to the theatre just nje... We welcome that too and are, as always, grateful for our audiences support in whatever form it comes in!
We're looking forward to taking this glide into the next phase with all of the valued members of our POPArt community. We are, as ever, open to suggestion and collaboration, so feel free to get in touch. In the meantime #ChooseGoodContent...
