POPArt Theatre, ‘an independent Johannesburg based theatre, production company and performing arts centre’ is using their January programme to “highlight issues facing our women and to educate all genders with respect to the perils of patriarchy, rape culture and more.”

Orly Shapiro, one of the co-directors of POPArt, says that they are using January as a moment to refresh and set intentions for this year.

2019 saw the world take a major stand against gender-based violence, mainly through the ‘Me Too’ movement. POPArt is making sure that this important topic is not left behind in 2019.

Shapiro says that they are “inviting major discussions on our stages in order to change the narrative for 2020 and beyond.”

Their January programme is the perfect reflection of this.

If you want to be involved in the conversation and help change the narrative, make sure to check out what is showing this month below.

An Hour with Gilli Apter

26th January

Gilli Apter is an award-winning comedy writer and COMIC’S CHOICE AWARD nominee. She has performed on TREVOR NOAH’S NATIONWILD, at Kings & Queens of Comedy, and on almost every other stage, to thousands of people throughout the country. If you haven’t heard of her, you haven’t left the house or watched TV since 2015.

Join Gilli for an hour of stand up comedy about everything that’s been on and in her mind over the last four years.  And it’s a lot: age; relationships; race; Judaism; the past; the future; robots - the type that are going to take over and annihilate humankind, not the type that don’t work at every intersection.

This is stand up comedy that you haven’t seen before. And it’s very, very good. Even Trevor said so. More Info and Bookings
