Joburg's leading art festival is taking from the 4th - 5th of October.
The festival, which is in its fourth consecutive year, is a must-attend for all theatre lovers in Johannesburg.
"You and the kids can enjoy a number of highly acclaimed theatre productions, live music, a children’s inflatable entertainment area, fringe performances, lectures, workshops, food trucks, a gin bar and beer tent! All of these fun activities then culminate in a not-to-be-missed live music festival on the Saturday night.
Redfest is the perfect day out for families and those wanting to see a number of sellout shows under one roof. So, don’t miss it or you’ll be missing out!"
Here are a few of the shows you can expect to see:
BORN NAKED is a highly acclaimed production that tells the true story of Thapelo Makhutle, a trans woman who was brutally murdered in a hate crime incident in 2012 in the Northern Cape. The show focusses on the coming-of-age of two young drag performers as they navigate their way through the colourful, glitzy LGBTQI+ terrain in the city of Joburg. A Q&A session with the director and cast will take place after the Friday evening performance.
Perfect for the little ones in the Pre-Preparatory School and Grade 1, RAT RACE is a delightful pop-up storybook play about an unlikely friendship between a stressed-out city rat (Miles) and an easy-going farm mouse (Melissa). Billed as a “comic play with a gentle eco theme that uses clowning, puppetry, illustrations, live music and physical theatre”, this is a heart-warming and delightful show that is an absolute must-see!
Critics have called it “the funniest play of the year” and “mind-blowing”. Starring celebrated actor, Matthew Ribnick, this award-winning one-man show sees Ribnick portraying various characters from diverse backgrounds and switching characters with ease. It tells the madcap story of eccentric bank teller, Edgar Chambers whose only friend is a monkey that lives at the back of the pet shop – we guarantee that you’ll be crying with laughter within the first 5 minutes!
In 1966, Dimitri Tsafendas assassinated Prime Minister Henrik Verwoerd, the founder and architect of Apartheid. Was Dimitri a confused loner or was he a courageous freedom fighter? This thought-provoking production presents the possibility that the deeply troubled Tsafendas may actually have been a sane man living in a strange land. Don’t miss this impressive, powerful and deeply moving performance by Renos Nicos Spanoudes – one of RedFest’s most highly-anticipated productions for 2019.
The Chilli Boy
This theatrical phenomenon had South African audiences flocking to the theatre for many years with its hilarious representation of cultural identity, racial difference and masculinity. Matthew Ribnick again showcases his award-winning skills with his portrayal of an old Indian woman that has reincarnated as a white gangster from Boksburg. Critics have called it “a phenomenal performance” and “just too good to miss” – an absolute must-see!
EVIL is the chilling real-life account of the teenage years of Erik Ponti. A victim of an abusive step-father and drawn to petty crime, he is sent to an elite boarding school where institutionalised bullying is the currency of a violent student council. Here Erik befriends the gentle, non-violent Pierre and musters the strength and determination to confront the bullies. Voted one of the top plays of the Imaginate Youth Festival in Edinburgh in 2016, EVIL confirms that young people want to be challenged to reflect on the issues that touch their lives.

This performance will cover what we are, where we came from, how we think, why we are so wrong about almost everything we think we know and how you can keep changing how your brain works until the moment you die, which you absolutely will do. It’s controversial thinking backed by research.
